3.5 Million Pet Owners Can’t Be Wrong

3.5 million pet owners put their trust in Petlog to ensure that if they lose their beloved family pet, they stand the best possible chance of being reunited with him or her. Petlog, the UK’s largest pet reunification database, registered over 500,000 newly microchipped pets, assisted with over 89,000 lost and found calls, and answered over 110,000 general enquiry calls last year alone.

Based in Buckinghamshire, the Petlog reunification service is on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to assist animal wardens, welfare centres, veterinary practices, rescue centres and local authorities, who can scan pets which have been found, to check for microchips.

Some owners have been reunited with their pets after many years apart. One lucky cat owner was recently reunited with her favourite feline after it had been missing for 6 years! Stories like these highlight how having a microchip (which is the size of a grain of rice), implanted in your pet hugely increases your chances of seeing them again. Once a microchip has been implanted in your pet, the relevant details are forwarded to Petlog, verified and stored ready and available at any time.

Petlog is an independent database managed by the Kennel Club, with a dedicated team who are prepared to go that extra mile in reuniting owners with their pets. This was recognised in 2007 when the team won the Veterinary Marketing Award and, in 2008, an award from Dog Theft Action and Vets Get Scanning to recognise the work Petlog carries out in reuniting owners with their pets.

Last year also saw the launch of Petlog Premium, a lifetime membership scheme that allows pet owners to update their personal details continually for a one-off fee of £10 (online). This scheme is proving hugely popular as owners recognise the importance of keeping their details up to date, with one pet owner commenting “that’s not a lot for peace of mind”.  Additional services are being added to the scheme, including a 30 mile lost pet radius alert system which highlights missing pets to authorised agents, and the ability for owners to forward holiday details so no matter where they travel within the EU they are covered (Petlog is a founder member of European Pet Network, which links all the microchipping databases across Europe).

Petlog works hard to promote the benefits of microchipping with microchip suppliers, welfare organisations, vets, dog wardens, police and private implanters.  Basic registration with Petlog covers the initial registration on the database and then promises a lifetime reunification service for the pet owner.  The cost of this service has remained at £1 (included in the price of the microchip) for the last 10 years.  However, in order to continue to provide a first class service the cost will rise to £2 as from 1st July 2008 due to inflation, rising telephone charges and related business costs.  The basic registration service does not include the ability to make amendments to an owner’s contact details, hence the introduction of the Petlog Premium lifetime membership scheme.

Caroline Kisko, speaking on behalf of the Kennel Club, said, “Petlog’s aim is to provide a first class service for both customers and pet owners. The Petlog team put so much into reuniting owners with their pets, which was recognised by the recent awards that the team has received. Petlog understands just how devastating it can be for an owner to lose a pet and is dedicated to encouraging owners to identify their pets properly, whether it’s a dog, cat, rabbit, tortoise or even a horse, so that, when found, they can be reunited as quickly as possible.”

The following microchip suppliers are associated with Petlog: Bayer Plc (Tracer), Pet- ID, Datamars, Petdetect, PetCode, Jecta, Peddymark, Fit & Fertile, Allflex and Core RFID.
