Charitable Trust Case Study - Funding of X-ray vision at Wood Green Animal Shelter
The Kennel Club Charitable Trust has helped save the day for hundreds of animals at Wood Green Animal Shelter in North London by donating the money needed to equip its X-Ray room.
The Trust awarded a grant of £19,000 to the shelter, based on Lordship Lane in Wood Green, to pay for a new X-Ray machine, processor and viewer at the facility. This up-to-date equipment will enable the shelter’s veterinary staff to treat animals more quickly and will help produce more detailed diagnostic images of the sick and injured animals brought into its care.
The new X-Ray room is just part of a massive refurbishment of Wood Green’s North London shelter, which has been operating since 1924. The clinic offers a donation-based veterinary service to almost 3,000 clients, many of whom are either on benefits or are homeless and may not otherwise be able to afford proper support and veterinary care for their animals.
Mike Townsend, Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, said, “We are pleased to be able to assist Wood Green Animal Shelters as they undertake such a large project. The shelter on Lordship Lane offers an invaluable service to the residents of Haringey and beyond, and I hope that the Trust’s donation helps them to continue to make a huge difference for dogs and other animals in the area.”
The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is marking its 20th anniversary this year, and the past twelve months have been the busiest yet for the charity. Since it was established in 1987, the Trust has distributed grants totalling nearly £3million to a wide variety of deserving causes, with almost £500,000 awarded in 2006 alone.
The Trust has three main objectives that support its overall mission of ‘Making a difference for dogs’:
- Science: Assisting the advancement of education and science by helping fund research into canine diseases and hereditary disorders in dogs.
- Support : Improving the quality of life for human beings by promoting dogs as therapeutic and practical aids.
- Welfare: Helping relieve the suffering of dogs who are in need of care and attention.
Wood Green Animal Shelters also has facilities in Heydon in Hertfordshire and Godmanchester in Cambridgeshire, and collectively they successfully rehomed a total of 1,034 dogs and 137 puppies last year. They also managed to return 172 lost dogs and 8 puppies to their owners.
It is hoped that the Lordship Lane facility will be able to reopen its doors to the public in January 2008, and animals are currently being treated at a temporary clinic based at Haringey Football Club.
Dennis Baker OBE, Chief Executive of Wood Green Animal Shelters, said, “We are extremely grateful to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust for the generosity in awarding us this donation towards our refurbishment project. The money that they have provided to equip our new X-Ray room will help ease the suffering for thousands of animals each year and our sincerest thanks go to the Trust.”
