Can Lulu Relight Her Fire To Win Political Dog Show?

Like her namesake, Lulu the beautiful Newfoundland looks set to make a career comeback, when she tries her paw at winning back the illustrious title of “Westminster Dog of the Year.” (25th October.)

Lovely Lulu, five is a seasoned political campaigner, combining her role as constituency hound-about-town with that of much-loved family pet.  In fact, Lulu’s owner, Roger Gale MP (Cons, North Thanet), gets complaints from constituents when he is not accompanied by “his girl” and is in no doubt about who they would rather see!

The Westminster Dog of The Year competition, organised by Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club, aims to highlight the unique relationship between man and dog, while promoting responsible dog ownership.  The competition is open to all parliamentarians’ pooches, regardless of breed, creed or pawlitical persuasion.

With not a spin doctor or focus group in sight, the Westminster Dog of the Year competition also provides the nation with the opportunity to see their MP or peer as a real human being – poop scoop bag and all.

Lulu first won the competition back in 2003, when judges were extremely impressed with her life-saving skills.  Lulu barked until she woke up the whole Gale household when the fuse box exploded in the small hours of the morning.

Since scooping her first victory, Lulu has not rested on her canine laurels, choosing instead to accompany Roger on his round of fundraising events, flag days and constituency visits.  She has also been busy training up her young companion, Lollie - a Newfoundland puppy – so that she can assist Roger in his parliamentary duties.   Lollie will also be entering the Westminster Dog of the Year competition, although at just six months old she doesn’t have the same wealth of experience as Lulu.  She is described as “A total lout, bouncy and lots of fun!”

The final takes place at 10.30am on Thursday 25th October at Victoria Tower Gardens, next to the House of Lords.  There will an assortment of canine competitors from both Houses, and for the second year dogs belonging to Westminster correspondents have been invited to enter the fray!
