Dogs for families with children

The Kennel Club supports the introduction of well-behaved dogs to young children and believes that well trained and socialised canines can have wonderful benefits for responsible dog owning families with children. Any dog, if trained and socialised properly, can make a wonderful family pet.

Choosing a breed

Three examples of breeds that can be particularly suited to families with children, because of their loyal and affectionate nature, are the Labrador, Boxer and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, however there are many more that are particularly good with children. More information about the characteristics of all registered breeds can be found at the Kennel Club's Breed Information Centre. Families wishing to introduce a dog into a home with children should ensure they choose the right breed for them, looking at the temperament of different breeds and the care that each require. Alternatively you can use our Find a Breed tool.

Dog and puppy training

To ensure dogs are happy and healthy, the Kennel Club recommends a proper training and socialisation routine. You can find out more about getting started in dog training and Kennel Club's Good Citizen Dog Scheme on our website.

The Puppy Socialisation Plan

The Puppy Plan is a step-by-step, simple but comprehensive, socialisation plan that starts with the breeder (or the puppy rearer, if different) who works through the first vital eight weeks. When the puppy goes to his new home, the Plan is then passed onto the new owner to continue for another eight weeks.

The plan has been developed to try and prevent behavioural problems, owners giving up on their dogs, and reduce the thousands of dogs who are handed over to rescue organisations, returned to breeders, or are euthanised for preventable behaviour problems.
