Kennel Club Dog Registration

The Kennel Club is dedicated to canine wellbeing and registers over 200,000 pedigree dogs every year. This knowledge helps to maintain the integrity and health of pedigree breeds. There are 210 breeds of dog eligible for Kennel Club registration, which are categorised in seven groups: Hounds, Gundogs, Terriers, Utility, Working, Pastoral and Toys

You may not be aware but the Kennel Club doesn’t just register pedigree dogs though – we’ve been registering crossbreeds and older dogs for over 50 years. Crossbreeds are also eligible for registration in their own right under the Activity Register and with the Companion Dog Club.

The Kennel Club deals with all matters relating to the registration of pedigree puppies, and is able to offer many services through its computer system, which contains registration details of every dog registered since 1982.

For your puppy to be eligible for entry onto the breed register, both its sire and dam must also be eligible for entry onto this register, and be of the same breed.

If your puppy is registered on the Kennel Club Breed Register, you will gain access to an unparalleled source of information, experience and advice on dog welfare, health, training and breeding. Registering your puppy with the Kennel Club also means that it can take part in many dog shows and dog events throughout the country. From fun days out to serious competitions, these activities are an opportunity to meet other dog owners, learn more about dogs, and simply have a great time.

Breed Registration Statistics

The Kennel Club publishes information on dog registrations received.  This information is also published within the Kennel Club Breed Record Supplement available through the Online Shop.

Pedigrees

When you collect your Kennel Club Registered puppy, the breeder may also supply a Kennel Club pedigree certificate.  If not, you can order a range of pedigrees directly from the Kennel Club - it is a unique record detailing your dog's family tree.  Further information on pedigrees.

What to do when you get your Kennel Club registered puppy home:

  • Transfer the ownership of the dog into your own name (you will find this section on the reverse of the registration certificate), ensuring that all parties have signed the relevant sections.  It is vital that you transfer the ownership as soon as possible so that the correct information is recorded on the Kennel Club database. Additionally in order to show or breed from your dog, it must be registered with the Kennel Club in your name.
  • The transfer application form also gives you the opportunity to order additional Kennel Club services on the transfer form including pedigrees, the Breed Records Supplement, Petlog Premium and much more. Discounted enhanced pedigrees can also be ordered at the same time that you apply to transfer the dog into your registered ownership.
  • After you have sent the transfer of ownership form back to the Kennel Club, you will receive a Kennel Club Owner Certificate with your details and those of your puppy printed on it.  An information guide on all the services that will be available to you as the owner of a Kennel Club registered dog will be included with your certificate.
