Surrey’s Own Pippa is Crowned Best Bitch in Companion Dog Club Competition at Discover Dogs

Pipa and Florence with Carolyn Menteith and Sarah FisherPippa, an 11 year old Terrier crossbreed, owned by Florence Shepherd from Carshalton, Surrey has been named overall Best Bitch in the grand final of the Companion Dog Club Competition at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs 2010, held at a packed Earls Court.

Journalist and author Judith Summers joined dog trainer and behaviourist, Carolyn Menteith and the UK's leading practitioner founder of the Tellington TTouch dog training technique, Sarah Fisher, to judge the competition and congratulated Pippa and Florence yesterday on their amazing achievement.

Florence was shocked but delighted at their win, saying: “I have had a fantastic day - I very much enjoyed it. This is possibly Pippa’s last year at Discover Dogs as she is getting a bit old for big shows, so it made us winning even more special.” 

The competition saw hundreds of dog of all ages, shapes and sizes step into the ring to compete in a series of fun categories. The contest included classes for purebred and crossbred dogs which are split by sex, with the dogs taking centre stage on Saturday and the bitches following suit on Sunday.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club spokesperson, said: “The Companion Dog Club competition is always one of the great highlights of Discover Dogs as it gives all kinds of dogs the chance to shine. Pippa has done really well to beat off some stiff competition and win the hearts of the judges.”

The following classes were held as part of the Companion Dog Club Competition:

Novelty Classes
•        Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog
•        Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch
•        Waggiest Tail – The dog with the wiggliest, waggiest tail!
•        Best Rescue – The canine companion who has had the most successful re-homing experience. Judges will look at the relationship between dog and owner, plus the dog’s general behaviour.
•        Best Buddies (Child handler under 12) – Where the child and dog are the best of friends. Judges will look at the relationship between dog and child; children may be accompanied by an adult in the ring.
•        Most Appealing Look – The happiest healthy dog with the most appealing look.
•        Best Canine Carer – The canine companion who helps its owner in any way from an assistance dog to just giving loads of love.  Judges will look at the relationship between dog and owner, plus the dog’s general behaviour.

Purebred Classes - open to any breed of purebred dog
•        Any Variety Sporting: Hound, Gundog, Terrier
•        Any Variety Non Sporting: Toy, Utility, Working, Pastoral

The competition was held in support of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust which looks after the health and welfare of all dogs with an entry fee of £1 per class. The Kennel Club Charitable Trust funds a wide variety of work ranging from supporting research into canine diseases, dog welfare organisations and the promotion of support dogs, all of which give dogs a healthier and happier life.
