Terry Schmidbauer from Seattle, Washington, USA has won the ‘Dog Portrait’ category in the Kennel Club’s prestigious Dog Photographer of the Year competition.

DPOTY Dog Portrait WinnerThe beautifully composed image of Mischu, a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier/Poodle cross was chosen by a panel of judges, including acclaimed fine art photographer Tim Flach.

Mischu is a cancer survivor - she was diagnosed with lymphoma last spring and after two chemotherapy treatments, holistic medicine and lots of love she is now cancer free, making the image even more poignant.

The annual competition is open to any dog lover, professional photographer and amateur alike, with a camera and a good eye. All proceeds from the competition go to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.

People from across the world sent in original shots that they had captured on camera to enter into one of five different categories. The overall competition winner this year was 16 year old Jennie Shelton who won the “I love dogs” category for young dog lovers, aged 16 and under, with her striking image of her Border/Lakeland Terrier cross, Tilly running through a field of poppies. The other categories were ‘Dogs at Play’, ‘Dogs at Work’ and ‘Man’s Best Friend’.

The winning photographs from each category will be on display at London’s leading dog event, Discover Dogs, which is held at Earls Court on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th November. The photographs will be on show for thousands of visitors at the event to view and the winner from each category will also be presented with a framed print of their photograph.

Representing the judging panel, Rosemary Smart, Chief Executive of the Kennel Club, said: “This year we have been overwhelmed by the amount and standard of entries received. We have had so many wonderful photographs that represent the individuality of every dog and really demonstrate people’s genuine love for dogs.

“It was a very difficult decision to select the winners so congratulations to all of our finalists, and thank you to everyone who shared with us such beautiful images. We hope these photographs will encourage many other dog lovers to capture images of their dogs and be inspired to enter next year’s competition.”

The Dog Photographer of the Year Competition is run in support of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, which is making a difference for dogs by funding a wide variety of work ranging from supporting research into canine diseases to welfare initiatives and the promotion of support dogs; all of which give dogs healthier and happier lives.
