Advice for Vets to give clients about buying a dog

Advice about buying a puppy

One of the main concerns that the Kennel Club hears from veterinary surgeons is how best they should advise their clients on finding and choosing a healthy puppy of the right breed for their client’s circumstances. The Kennel Club believes that the top five recommendations that one can pass on to a prospective puppy buyer are as follows:

  • If choosing a purebred dog, always buy from a Kennel Club Assured Breeder (more information can be found in this manual)
  • Never buy on impulse
  • Always see the puppy with its mother in its home environment
  • Ask for a contract of sale which outlines the responsibilities of both the breeder and the buyer towards the puppy
  • Request copies of any relevant health screening certificates for the puppy’s parents. Many of these results can be checked online on the Kennel Club’s Health Test Results Finder

The Kennel Club Assured Breeder Scheme – Finding the Right Breeder

When sourcing a healthy pedigree puppy it is the breeder that is the most important consideration - buying a pedigree dog should not be done ‘on the cheap’ nor should it come from a disreputable source. By going to a responsible dog breeder you stand the best chance of getting a dog that will enjoy a happy and healthy life.
