Dog Rental Businesses
The Kennel Club is greatly concerned by the operation and expansion of dog rental businesses in the UK. Predominantly we are concerned with: where the dogs involved come from; what happens to the dogs when they are too old to be rented out; distress caused to the dogs as a result of being rented out to a number of people; encouraging irresponsible attitudes to dog ownership; and the potential for non compliance with the Animal Welfare Act in terms of providing a dog with the ability to exhibit normal behaviour patterns.
The Kennel Club has been raising the issue in Westminster, Welsh Assembly and in the Scottish Parliament and has been meeting with MPs, AMs and MSPs to discuss the issue. We will continue to lobby Westminster and the devolved administrations in 2009 to introduce regulations on such companies under the Animal Welfare Act.
