Kennel Club Charitable Trust makes a Difference for Breeders in Need of Advice

The Kennel Club Charitable Trust is making a difference around the clock for dog breeders and owners in need of support and advice, by funding the Breeders’ Helpline. The Breeders’ Helpline is a 24/7 telephone service that was set up in May 2001 to provide a sympathetic, confidential ear to those concerned about the welfare of their dogs or someone else’s, and needing someone to talk to.

Anyone contacting the service, through the dedicated number 0845 30 30 180, will find themselves talking to a knowledgeable dog person who will understand their feelings and concerns, and can offer advice accordingly. Not only is the service completely confidential, but callers have the right to remain anonymous if they prefer.

The types of calls typically received through the Breeders’ Helpline fall into three main categories. Firstly, there are calls from breeders who have become overstocked and under-resourced at their premises, with a drop in the standard of welfare and care. These calls are often linked to an elderly owner, who is trying to cope with a reduction in income or has an understandable attachment to their ‘golden oldies’ and cannot bear to part with them.

The other two types of calls most commonly received on the helpline are requests for veterinary guidance when dogs are unwell, and advice when a summons is about to be or has already been issued.

Recent examples of the benefits for people using the helpline include the assistance given to a caller from a very distressed person who was facing an eviction order and wanted help rehoming a number of dogs, and advice provided to a breeder who had sold a puppy which subsequently developed unforeseen health problems. The Breeders’ Helpline was also able to assist a family in making appropriate arrangements, in advance, for the care of an elderly relative’s dogs whilst the person concerned underwent treatment in hospital.

To help inform and remind breeders of the support available to them, advertisements for the helpline are currently being placed in a range of publications, including the Kennel Gazette, Dog World, Our Dogs, Dogs Monthly, Your Dog and Veterinary Times, as well as the show catalogues for several Championship Shows.
