Stray Success As Rescue Dog Passes Silver Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Award
From being at risk of being put to sleep to achieving his Silver Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme Award - Kaiser is a great dog rescue success story.
In 2007, Kaiser was taken to HULA, a small animal charity based in Milton Keynes. Kaiser was a stray dog who had been found in Wales and was due to be put down when an organisation which co-ordinates rescue places for dogs in need called Hope Rescue secured his place at HULA.
HULA were unable to find a family home for Kaiser and so decided to help improve his quality of life and attitude by enrolling him in the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme. Kaiser has graduated from Junior Obedience through the Bronze Good Citizen Dog Scheme and has now passed the Silver Good Citizen Dog Scheme award.
Karina Collins from HULA said: “I decided to take Kaiser to training classes as he had not received early socialisation so he was very fearful of new situations and new people. Kaiser could not walk on the lead without pulling, he lacked essential social skills, which manifested in him barking and lunging at people.
“The training course and subsequent participation in the Kennel Club Bronze and Silver Schemes via Dogs in Training have been invaluable and really helped to change Kaiser in to a well mannered, obedient and lovable lad who is a pleasure to spend time with.”
The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme Silver Award aims to build upon the skills learned in the Bronze Award such walking and behaving in a controlled manner on the lead, staying in one position on command and allowing an owner to clean, groom and inspect a dog without struggle. The Silver Award is a natural progression of those practical dog training skills and introduces new concepts such as ensuring that a dog does not jump up at strangers, walking safely along a road whilst on a lead and getting in and out of a vehicle in a controlled manner, all of which are important in everyday life situations.
Angela Wilkins from Dogs in Training helped turn Kaiser around and said: ''Kaiser has risen to every challenge put to him and I am proud that he has achieved the Silver Good Citizen Dog Scheme award.''
Both HULA and Hope Rescue have benefitted from grants from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust. The Charitable Trust funds a wide variety of work ranging from supporting research into canine diseases, dog welfare organisations and the promotion of support dogs, all of which give dogs a healthier, happier life.
Founded in 1987, the Charitable Trust has donated over £4.5 million to support organisations such as HULA and Hope Rescue so that they can continue to do their great and much needed work.
